Poster analysis #2

The second poster I have chosen to do an analysis on is ‘Never let me go’. I’ve personally have never seen this film, but the initial view of the poster drew me in.

On the front of this particular film poster, 2 main characters are shown running towards the end of what looks like a pier. Although the photo caught my attention, it feel it would be more effective having the two characters facing the front so the audience is able to make a connection with the characters face and its emotions that it portrays. The image shown seems fairly impersonal. I think it subverts general posters as it appears to be very vague compared to many others. The minimalism of the entire poster gives not a lot away yet still is able to draw the attention of an audience, this may be due to tension it creates by doing this. The amount of content given through the imagery is also limited, therefore not much is able to be gathered by the layout. Unlike movies such as “Harry Potter’ or any follow on films, these posters may need to denote more through the use of imagery, titles, tagline and more. However, It is acknowledged that the film is based on from ‘best novel of the decade’ - times, which will already give it a percentage of viewers.Although the way in which the two characters are positioned could connote that the story is a romance as it shows one character running after the other which may indicate either lust or love. This is an obvious screenshot from the film itself. The colours in the image are calm which often link to the mind and body and are a symbol of comforting and nurturing which could connote the romance as well. The background is full of blue with just a hint of red/orange which add warmth to the overall poster and connects with the theme of romance.

The title is the main focal point besides the image, the white thin but large text compliments the colours used in the background and allows this text stand out the most. The use of colour in the majority of text also connotes the same symbols of the image, as the colour is calm it again illustrates comfort. White in comparison to colours such as red is also welcoming which could potentially make the audience feel more invited into watching the film. Text such as the release date almost seems blurred which makes it difficult to identify, this is an important piece of info which should be given more attention.

As this film had not receive a large amount of media attention, including actors and directors on the poster is extremely important in order to grab more audiences attention. The text is smaller than the title, yet is still clear to read. The producer of this particular poster has also made significant effort to include text such as ‘Academy award winner’ to draw more attention to the specific actors as well as stating that the film was from the director of ‘one hour photo’. No imagery on the poster indicates that this film is in appropriate for younger viewers and the entire look seems fairly friendly to most viewers, however a age restriction is present in order to clarify this.

This is another poster for the film which significantly contrasted the original one I looked at. The main difference that instantly stands out is the colours. The first poster is filled with very calm colours where as this particular poster is full of red which connotes a completely different meaning. Red is seen as a very emotionally intense colour however the main emotion it portrays is anger. However the light red balances out the dark red which shows more passion and love. The red however does bring text and images to the foreground which compliments the white text and the 3 photos which appear on the poster. As seen the main focal image from the above poster is featured on this one as well which may represent the significance in this particular photo.

This poster is also very different in terms of layout. Many posters tend to be in portrait rather than landscape however this may of been used of larger areas of distribution such as billboards.
