Mental health film

Over the last week a new short film has been released focusing on a mental health issue which relates to my own personal short film. The actress Denise Welch exclusively shared her short film and has already won awards for the piece she has created. She created this to portray her own experience with depression and has said to help break down stigma about mental health issues.

It follows the story about her depression and is significantly represented by a younger figure in an all black costume.  The story plays on the idea that depression is an ongoing state of mind.

When viewing the short film it highlighted certain aspects of what depression is like for people which I am able to include within my own short film focusing on mental health. It was interesting seeing the contrast of mental health being portrayed by an adult compared to the portrayal I will show of a teen/young adult, although it didn’t show much difference, It signified that mental health affects people in similar ways.
The way in which the film was edited and shot helped add to the effect it had on the audience. The abrupt scene at the beginning of her crying in the car set the emotion of the entire narrative, it automatically shocked me and showed an insight into her life and how often her emotions and mental health changes which is important for the audience to see, especially if they do not experience it themselves.
I really liked the beginning where a black screen was used with an overlay of a countdown. From seeing this I would like to incorporate something similar into my own piece.

Denise Welch wishes that this production on mental health will change the perceptions of depression and give others hope that depression and mental health can get better even if it takes its time to get smaller. Similar to this, I want my short film to be part of awareness and break the norm of mental health.

As my production is based on mental health, it was helpful this particular short film came out around this time as I was able to compare and review my own research as I could see where it was also applied in ‘black eyed susan’. I was also able to adapt my ideas on how I wanted portray mental health within my own short film, this including lighting I will use, mise-en-scene and specifically body language

('black eyed susan' has been deleted since)
