Plot idea

From reviewing all the research I have found, I began to think about the plot for my own short film. I wanted to create a relatable piece of work which both myself and my audience can reflect on.

I made the final decision to create a drama short film based upon mental health, particularly on mental health that occurs after a tragic event or loss. This is both very dear to me and is seen to increasing amongst young people.

My short film will focus on a character who suffers with depression and anxiety after the loss of her sister, who died in an car accident . The storyline will follow her struggles with mental health after everything that has happened. In her mind she still sees her sister beside her as she can't come to terms with the loss of her closest family member. She is the only one who still sees her presence and therefore is not fully aware that her sister is no longer around. She doesn’t leave her home due to the anxiety and depression it has caused. Only for her to finally leave, leading her back to the scene of the accident where it became apparent that her sister is no longer with her.

I thought about using a social psychology term called re-framing. Reframing is a way of viewing and experiencing events, ideas, concepts and emotions to find more positive alternatives. The concept of my idea leading to my character realising that her sister is no longer around by revisiting the location of the accident can be altered in order to put this term in practice. Towards the end my character will start to realise and remember what happened and begin to try change the events that happened in order to create a more positive outcome. However, as her sister is now longer actually with her, she is unable to make any changes to what has occurred and realised that all this time her sister has been gone and she is unable to get her back.
The positive reframing won't change the situation yet gives perspective in a powerful way.  I would like to make it clear that from this realisation through reframing that my character is now able to feel as if she can move on without having a significant weight on her shoulders.

I would like to be able to create a positive outlook on mental health through representation in my production. To do this it is in my intention to break the barrier that mental health is now accepted as a social norm. By using and putting emphasis on reframing it is able to show that you don't don't always have to repeat the same cycle with mental health but can move forward and overcome the struggles it brings, even if it is a slow process. Conveying a positive message will more likely provide a better platform for people as it is not focusing on the ‘worse’ side.
