Introduction

Welcome to my A2 media blog.

I have chosen to follow the task of creating a short film lasting approximately five minutes long  with the two out of the three ancillaries:
  • Making a poster for the film 
  • A radio trailer for the film
  • A film magazine review page featuring the film
There were multiple choices we were allowed to chose from this year in our media course which allowed us to have some freedom in how we go about producing out final product. I felt as if the choice of a film gave me an option to explore my skills more compared to doing print again like last year,such as the newspaper task. Not only this, but I will be able to examine the film industry and how they come about ideas and producing the overall products. It's exciting to learn about all that goes into the process. Also by choosing film I can see two sides of the media industry and see the difference between film and print work.

Out of all of the choices given, I also felt most connected to the short film task. I often watch films in my free time and I like seeing narrative unfold and following a story to the end. If I experience making my own short film, I will more likely appreciate the effort that goes into the product when watching films in the future. For me personally, I also stay connected with the YouTube community and have watched a few short films published.

Other tasks such as creating the trailer also grabbed my interest, however I felt I had more leeway with creating a short film. The ancillary tasks are very similar to the the task I have chosen so that did not affect my desicion. By choosing the trailer, I would of had a harder time trying to create a story as well, so overall I found the short film to be a better task for me.

The two ancillary tasks for my short film I have chosen to do are:
  • A poster for the film 
  • A film magazine review page featuring the film
In my AS task I created a music magazine using photoshop, therefor I will be able to use the skills I have learnt from photoshop to create my poster and magazine review which will benefit me and my final products.

In my upcoming posts I will show my research and planning for my final product, a short film.

Magazine review page analysis #3

The last review page I am using is from Total film. The main focal photo on the magazine is placed on the left side which throughout my research I have found is uncommon. This photo is very eye catching to an audience member due to the use of the main character and the 3D effect. This also connotes a lot about the narrative, it almost looks magic which represents what is included in the film. A second image is included in this which shows the behind the scenes of the film. Although commonly these are not shown, it makes the review more personal. By seeing the behind the scenes, the audience commonly feel more involved with the film as well which could potentially encourage them to watch the film. The length of the review is long enough to give insight to the film and the overall review however no clear large title is given regarding the name of the film. ‘Fantastic beasts’ is written above the page with the body of texts, although its noticable it doesn't stand out as much

Theorists Of Narrative

Narrative is about a tale, a story, recital or facts. It's the way in which a story is told in both fictional and non-fictional media texts. Narrative has no right or wrong way and it can always be challenged. Narrative story refers to events you can see and those that are inferred. Voices of narrative can vary and the intention of narrative can be different for different stories. Their are multiple key theorists that have explored narrative. Tzventan Todorov-  Todorov was a Bulgarian-French historian, philosopher, structuralist literary critic, sociologist, essayist and geologist. He believed that narrative starts with an equilibrium An action or character disrupts the equilibrium  A quest to restore the equilibrium begins The narrative continues to climax Resolution occurs and equilibrium is restored Todorov also believes that narratives follow in a chronological order. An example of Todorov's theory within the media industry would be the TV series Sherlock

Genre Theory

The word genre originates from France meaning 'a kind' Like other aspects of media, genre has a set of codes and conventions which help identify what the audience is viewing in terms of content. These conventions include, characters and story, set, technical and audio. All contributing to the overall effect that the genre illustrates. Sub-genre and hybrid genre's also exist which tend to attract a narrowed down audience compared to genre as a whole. Many people are interested in sub genres as it can include two or more areas of film they like such as romantic comedies. Codes and conventions are mixed to create these hybrid to satisfy audiences pleasures. Considering  genre theory  before choosing my final genre is essential as it may help my approach in choosing my final genre for my short film. Henry Jenkins- American media scholar, professor of communication, journalism and cinematic arts. Jenkins sees genre as constantly breaking rules. Takes on a Modern approach
