Further Narrative Techniques.
Narrative refers to the structure of story telling and can be applied to both moving image and media texts. After looking into theorists regarding narrative, I also wanted to research into different media techniques in order to help me produce my final shirt film.
Texts tend to tell their stories from a certain point of view. Two examples of this are:
Texts tend to tell their stories from a certain point of view. Two examples of this are:
- Omniscient narration- this is a type of narration where the audience is able 'see all'. Not necessarily everything is revealed in the narrative, but often the audience will be aware of more than the characters in the film do.
- Restricted narration- This technique only uses the point of view of one character in order to tell the story. This is usually the protagonist, but not always. This technique allows the audience to know as much or as little as the characters do.
Manipulating time is another technique used within films to add to the ability of making an interesting story. This is easily done by using mise-en-scene to represent certain periods of time such as use clock hands to show time passing or using a calendar which is an easier way to show days passing and not just hours. These are good ways for a producer to compress time without taking up too much of the screen time, especially in short films. It is important for producers to keep continuity even when illustrating time passing. if not, it can easily ruin the narrative and unfortunately becomes confusing for the audience with ruins the overall appeal of a movie. Flashbacks and Flash-forward are also another technique which allows us to see events from different perspectives.
Producers also manipulate the audiences perception by creating tight deadlines. These help create suspense and tension with a plot.
Not all media texts will use conventional approaches to narrative , some media texts will manipulate the way is told. This being in order to undermine audiences expectations.
An example being: a conventional approach to resolutions, there would always be a resolution to a problem. Where as, an alternative approach would be that not all problems are solved and the text fails to answer all the questions the audience wants to know. However this may lead to the audience being unsatisfied.
