Primary research continued
As a way to broaden my primary research, I decided to present my questionnaire to a wider range of ages. I only previously presented the questions to people of the ages to 16-20+ and although this is the age range I personally want to target, I felt it would be beneficial to explore the interest of other ages in order to compare my results.
For this, I asked 3 people from the ages of 40-70 and two from the ages of 10-12.
The questions remained the same:
What gender are you?
What is your preferred genre?
Do you think genre is a key aspect to why you watch a certain film?
What attracts you to watching a film?
What poster do you find most attractive?
Do you often view short films?
If so, on what platforms?
What gender are you?
2 out of the 5 people were male. Both being the two eldest.
What is your preferred genre?
When asking these 5 people, I got all different answers. Horror and thrillers were the ones with most in common which came from the two eldest that I asked. This subverts a view that I had on older people, as I had believed that these genres were considered as unpopular. Wider statistics support my belief as it shows males 55+ enjoy comedy far greater than horror. Although, Thrillers are shown to be quite popular along with action. Another answered with being period dramas and the two youngest said both drama and action films were the favourite.
Considering the dominant response to this question was drama amongst the ages 16-20+, it shows the differences in preferences due to age, Yet shows a correlation between dramas and females.
Do you think drama is a key aspect to why you watch a certain film?
3 out of 5 answered with yes. This still gives me the indication that choosing the correct genre is significant when producing my product in order to attract my audience.
What attracts you to watching a film?
Actors were ticked on all of the questionnaires, therefore illustrating that actors are significantly important. As well as storyline being ticked on all but one. By researching into a wider variety of ages, it has shown that most people look for the same thing when viewing a film. Actors, storyline and genre are all generally important to audiences.
Which poster do you find most attractive?
3 out of the 5 responses circled ‘the girl with the dragon tattoo’ poster. Which is fairly similar to the results I received from my previous research. The other two chose the ‘joy’ poster, leaving none choosing the ‘moonlight’ one. I was surprised when the two youngest circled ‘the girl with the dragon tattoo’ poster as it has no colour or anything leaned towards younger audiences, however this was the one that captured their attention the most.
Do you often watch short films?
Only the two youngest responded with yes which in comparison to the previous research is almost identical showing that younger audiences tend to view short films the most often. The older audiences tend to stick with films and don't branch out into watching short films however this may be due to generations and limits to access them.
If so, on what platforms?
YouTube again was the primary answer. YouTube is more accessible to younger audiences as they tend to use the internet more regularly compared to older people. As YouTube was also the primary answer on my previous research, it shows that by using YouTube will definitely reach a wider audience.
By doing both versions of my primary research, it has shown me the key information I wanted to know about audiences in order for me to chose my target audience. I have found that short films do attract a niche audience, however by distributed it correctly can expand my audiences through social media use. My genre is now decided through this research. I have chosen the genre of ‘drama’ as this was most common and most relatable to myself, therefore I believe this is the best decision. Drama also doesn’t have a niche audience compared to a possible hybrid genre therefore can be targeted at more people as they will most likely be more attracted to my product. From originally giving out my questionnaire to 16-20 year olds as I wanted these ages to be my target audience, I am sticking with my choice of this age group as I am of a similar age. I feel as if I can create a film suitable for them. By giving the questions to a second lot of people of different ages it has shown me that I am personally not confident enough to create a short film suitable for their tastes as all well knowing older generations do not tend to view short films in general and by creating a short film for children limits me to what I can include in my production.
My target audience:
From the ages of 16-20.
Females.
Fans of the genre ‘drama’
